Surely they're not going to visit the Amex office a number of times every day? They will need cash to pay their hotel, their meals, any purchases, travel, etc. Yes, if one loses TCs, one can get replacement, but what is the visitor doing with the cheques? Why, converting them into cash! And going to one outlet in York (in this case) and carrying the said cash (assume a fair sum) around York. I would hope that all travellers take out insurance which WILL cover loss of cash. Recently there was a particularly long chain on the Edinburgh forum with even British banks not being very willing to accept them. In this case the person is intending to use the Amex office in York but the forums are full of people complaining that no one wants TCs in UK or in Europe. The usual problem with folks from US and Canada is that they assume that TCs can be used over here just like cash as they can in the US. Just like yourself, I, and others, were only trying to help. Thank you brickie for your helpful comments.
